Benefits of homegrown

Letters

Editor:

Thank you for publishing the letters on local food production on the Sunshine Coast. I moved to the Coast last July from South Delta, a stronghold of local farming in the GVRD. I wanted to be able to source fresh food without having to buy everything from the local grocery stores.

I was thrilled to find a small but growing community of local growers who are passionate about what they produce. It’s a challenge to make a living on small-scale growing at the best of times but when you add in a small population to draw from, the odds are daunting. I feel strongly we need to help our growers get their produce to the marketplace – the Gibsons Farmers Market, the Gibsons Public Market, the Sechelt Farmers Market and the various small co-ops and collectives that are starting up around us are all excellent options.

I have been ordering from the Sechelt Farm Collective since its inception. I have my own garden but I love supplementing with veggies that I don’t grow. The offering changes weekly and I know I am contributing to our local economy just by buying one or two fresh ingredients every week. I love the personal touch I get from picking up my order “down the street.” I strongly support small business and feel our community could benefit in so many ways by shifting our spending habits. It only takes one email or phone call or visit to the market.
