There is a lot of clearing going on in the town these spring days. With this is the disappearance of bird habitat. Gone is the thicket of wild roses and blackberry that was rich with bird song two months ago and is now silent because there’s nothing left. Gone is the favourite huckleberry bush that was a pit stop for birds (and humans) on the way up the hill. Gone are the salmonberries that make for excellent shelter and food for the wrens, robins and towhees, and the maples that the local screech owl would perch in. Places like these make up the sweet spots in town. When replanting these zones, please consider shrubs and trees that benefit the birds, and perhaps they will return.
