Beauty marred by industry

On Easter weekend I went with family and friends to hike the Skookumchuck trail up to the Narrows. It was a predicted -XL tide, and with the gorgeous weather and excellent hiking conditions, it did not disappoint.

The Roland Point viewing location was wonderful, and the North Point viewing area gave us a spectacular view of the huge spiraling eddies.

We are so blessed to have such a spectacular protected area in our backyard. Even on a spring weekend, there were visitors from other countries as well as Vancouver and many locals. Unfortunately, the land that provides a backdrop to all this unique beauty is not protected and is marred by industrial activity. The massive clear-cut bestowed to us by the Courtnall hockey brothers still looms large across from Roland Point, and a gravel operation scars the vista from North Point.

This damage is particularly noticeable in photos.

I thought there were regulations that required industry to provide tree barriers to mitigate the visual impact of this type of development in areas that rely on tourism.

If there aren't, there should be.
