Be responsible with your dogs

LETTERS

Editor:

I was recently attacked and bitten by an on-leash dog in Kinnikinnick Park, while trying to avoid the large off-leash dogs also barking and leaping at me.

The dog walker, who was clearly not in control of the approximately five loose dogs plus two on-leash dogs, did apologize, but this did not alleviate the blood running down my leg from a small puncture wound or my traumatized state.

I have had similar frightening encounters with these and other dogs in the park, and frequently have to yell at them to stop from being jumped on.

Several of my neighbours say that they are now afraid to walk alone in the park, for the same reason. It’s not uncommon to suddenly encounter a large growling, barking or aggressive dog on the path while the owner is far behind or not even in sight. Yes, this is an off-leash park, but responsible owners should have verbal control of their pets. Either that or they should be using a leash and/or a muzzle.

It’s unfortunate that I now feel compelled to be armed with a deterrent spray, but I will certainly not hesitate to use it the next time I feel threatened. Thanks to the quick response from the RCMP and the Sunshine Coast Regional District in this case, a fine has been levied under the dog licensing and control bylaw.
