Re: “Celebrating Family Literacy,” Special Feature, Jan. 22.
It was intriguing to read just what Family Literacy entails and the opportunities for all to engage in varied experiences in our Sunshine Coast communities. Literacy is not just reading and writing. What about mentioning that literacy also involves language – an avenue to explore beyond just the spoken word? Consider free expression through drawing – drawing as art, drawing as language, drawing as literacy. When children are given the opportunity to draw what they freely choose to do, when they have concluded their image, what they can tell you about it! However, adults must be alert listeners to appreciate and marvel at their children’s stories.
Why not explore another road to literacy?
