Angels walk among us

Letters

Editor:

In today’s day and age, we hear a lot about the unpleasant things that people do, and all the bad that is going on in the world, so it is easy to forget that there are angels that walk among us. I was reminded of the basic goodness of people on the night of Sunday, Sept. 23.

Just after 10 p.m., a caring gentleman by the name of Ryan Hewgill was driving past our house on Redrooffs Road. When he looked over towards our house, he noticed flames burning in the lower southeast corner of the building. Mr. Hewgill did not simply dial 911 to report the fire and move on, which we would have been grateful for as well. No, he drove into our driveway honking his car horn, and before I could get out of bed and get outside, he already had the garden hose out and was pouring water on the fire, while talking to the fire department on the phone. What an amazing deed for a complete stranger to do for us!

My wife and I, my daughter and her boyfriend were all asleep in bed at the time, and we are all eternally grateful to Ryan Hewgill for his quick-thinking actions. If not for this hero’s intervention, this could have turned into a terrible tragedy that I shudder to think about.

Now that the fire is out and we are able to fully assess the situation, it is unsettling (to say the least) to realize how close this came to getting out of control and to us losing our house and precious personal memories – and I don’t want to even think about the possibility of injury.

We are truly grateful to you, Ryan.
