Like many retirees, my wife and I moved to the Sunshine Coast many years ago from other parts of Canada. I think most of us will agree that a major reason for the move was that most of us thought, and still do think, that we had found Shangri-La, paradise, the Garden of Eden - take your pick.
We have not changed our minds, but we are very disappointed.
A favourite summer pastime is to sit on our favourite beach, Soames, and have a swim. But this year, a rock has certainly met a hard place. Parking: a challenge, but acceptable. Walking down to the beach: single-file, but acceptable. And the beach: wow, a mountain of logs to cross (a fun challenge for younger people) but for my wife and I, and many others who have, age-wise, seen better days, a call for help to any Sherpas who might be around. Even then, it's quite a challenge and risky at that.
An appeal to the Sunshine Coast Regional District: "Yes, we will improve the parking and keep the pathway clear. But as for the beach, that is federal territory, the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans. We can't do anything about it."
Baloney! We expect co-operation. Governments at various levels tend to fight one another, but can't they dance together for a change?
