My 90-year-old mother mailed me a Coast Reporter clipping about the Coast’s short-term rental problem – it’s definitely a problem. I also know the Coast’s long-term rental availability is lacking critically. Sadly, people do not want to be landlords for a whole host of reasons.
I recently travelled to the Coast on “essential business” and was required to quarantine for two weeks. I could’ve stayed at a hotel/motel, but that would’ve been an exorbitant cost where I would’ve had a room without cooking capability. Fortunately, the Airbnb I rented offered complete isolation and I was also able to cook all my meals. The host was on site the entire time. The neighbours probably didn’t even know I was there, as my car was far from sight. It’s a shame that some Airbnb hosts have allowed their STRs to be party houses. I hope that when rules and regulations are rewritten some STRs will still be available – certainly for short-term situations like my own.
