Above the herd

Letters

Editor:

Re: “Fanning flames of fear” by Dr. Robert Gayton, Letters, April 24.

The province declared a medical emergency on March 18. The province’s instructions could not be clearer: “Now is not the time to travel for tourism or recreation. By temporarily avoiding non-essential travel, British Columbians can do their part to protect vulnerable people in communities from COVID-19.”

Dr. Gayton’s letter is illustrative of those who place themselves above the herd. To be sure, we on the Coast value and respect those who come to enjoy the singular beauty of what the Coast has on offer. But, not now please. We cannot travel to North Vancouver to visit with our daughter, and she cannot come here. Costco expeditions, walks around Stanley Park, etc., are off the table. Right now, that is not essential. Just like travel to your second, or holiday home is not essential. Oh yeah, and COVID-19-related medevacs to Lions Gate Hospital would fall under the rubric of essential.
