Abide by rules of road

Let me first say that I love living in the Pender Harbour area. The sense of community, the wide choice of activities and the joy and dedication that goes into something like May Day are truly impressive.

I’m writing this on Saturday eve of May Day weekend, shaking, after driving home down Garden Bay Road. Garden Bay Road is winding with lots of tight corners – we all know that and drive accordingly. This evening I came around one corner and there were seven to 10 long boarders scattered across the road and their vehicle parked, in two-thirds of my lane. I had to stop suddenly so as not to hit either the car or a boarder and wait for oncoming traffic to pass. I just got past these kids, and headed around a very tight, blind corner, only to be faced with five boarders in the other lane and three heading straight for me. I slammed on my brakes, hoped the gentleman tailgating me could stop in time, and watched as these three kids just barely made it past the front end of my car. My point is, I’m all for these events, but these kids have to think about what they’re doing. If I had hit and, God forbid, killed one of the kids, I couldn’t live with myself. I don’t know if I’d be able to get behind the wheel again. All because they’re up here to have a good time.

Don’t stop boarding, but please use your common sense – this is not some rarely used back alley where you can take up both lanes at will.
