On Monday, July 22, I learned I had a serious optical malfunction, a detached retina in my left eye, as well as the dangerous pre-existing condition that could lead to a detached retina in the right eye.

The first sign of malfunction was the sense that a curtain had dropped over the corner of my eye, obscuring my vision.

The "curtain" effect progressed and the vision in the rest of the eye became blurry. I was not then aware of the symptoms of a detached retina, but hope others will be better informed than I was; time is of the essence in responding, I have learned.?

I was fortunate that my family doctor was able promptly to arrange an appointment with an eye surgeon, who saw me and operated on the same day.?

I am now in the midst of a series of surgeries on my left eye designed to restore its vision and will have a better idea next week on the prognosis.

My excellent staff continue to serve our constituents even when my current situation hampers my ability to do so.?

I am grateful for the high quality of medical service I received in British Columbia, for prayers and encouragement of many people, and for the continued ability to see clearly with my right eye.?

Meanwhile, I urge all Canadians, especially health and fitness advocates and promoters, to remember the importance of eye health.

May we all lean increasingly toward a preventive health care approach including regular eye exams.
