15-minute highway

Letters

Editor:

I’ve heard lots of people talking during the election campaign about improved ferries or a fixed link. Before we decide on a fixed link, it’s clear we need to focus on improving our highway situation here on the Coast first. There have been times when accidents have shut down Highway 101 for hours.

Also there are no real safe places for cycling and we’ve seen our share of large trucks driving through residential neighbourhoods in Sechelt when there have been detours off the existing Highway 101.

The “bypass to nowhere” from the ferry terminal to the top of the Langdale hill was completed in the ’90s – isn’t it time to get the rest of this highway, at least to Sechelt, completed?

Imagine a highway from Langdale to Sechelt with connecting roads to access Gibsons, Roberts Creek and Sechelt. From studies done, the travel time to Sechelt could be reduced to about 15 minutes. What a boon in safety, accessibility and efficiency, for everyone.

And, before anyone says such will harm the communities along the way, remember the uproar over the Gibsons Way (bypassing Lower Gibsons)? Today, Lower Gibsons is a huge beneficiary from not having ferry traffic racing through the idyllic waterfront community. Roberts Creek, Davis Bay and Sechelt need the same, now.

For this to happen, we need some real pressure on Victoria – by someone who will deliver results for us. I have personally spoken with the Liberals’ Mathew Wilson, who realizes this is needed first before any fixed link can happen.

Keep this in mind when you vote.
