Drivers can access the Langdale bypass now that work to replace a culvert has finished.

The section of Highway 101 west of Langdale between Marine Drive and Stewart Road reopened Saturday, Jan. 9 at 3:30 p.m., according to Capilano Highway Services.

It had been closed in both directions since Jan. 6 and was originally expected to reopen Friday, but the closure was extended because of more serious repairs required.

“Unfortunately, the damage to Highway 101 as a result of heavy rains required the full replacement of the culvert under the highway. This will take a bit longer than initially planned,” said MOTI in a statement emailed to Coast Reporter.

Crews and heavy machinery were on site repairing the road base and replacing a culvert on a section of the bypass “weakened by recent heavy rain.”

Water from the rain events bypassed an existing culvert and caused significant voids under the highway around the culvert, said MOTI. Drivers were asked to take North Road to access the Langdale ferry terminal.
