Terry Knight has announced his intention to run for director for Halfmoon Bay.

With the Aug. 21 announcement that Terry Knight will be running for director for Halfmoon Bay, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) has its first official election race.

Knight will be running against Lori Pratt, currently chair of School District No. 46 and a realtor with Royal LePage Sussex. She announced her decision to run in February.

Outgoing director Garry Nohr announced in May that he would be stepping down – however, he has agreed to be Knight’s alternate on the SCRD board.

A retired businessman and current president of the Halfmoon Bay Community Association (HBCA), Knight said he made the decision to run after prompting from constituents who support his work as president of the HBCA.

“We do the Halfmoon Bay Fair, we do Breakfast with Santa, we do the Apple Fest,” he said, adding, “with the success we’ve shown with that, people have come out and said ‘you should be the guy.’”

Knight, 68, said Nohr as his alternate would bring the knowledge and experience that Knight lacks.

He said he, as with Nohr, supports the Chapman drawdown project. “Not knowing all the facts, it makes the most sense from what I’ve heard so far,” said Knight. He said he also supports building a reservoir, universal water metering and the search for groundwater.

Another project Knight said he will be bringing to the board is ongoing fundraising efforts for the $1.9-million Coopers Green Hall replacement project. So far, the HBCA has raised $210,000 of its overall goal of $300,000. “We’re in the process of trying to organize a golf tournament with the Vancouver Canucks alumni,” he said.

Knight, who is Coast Reporter’s community columnist for Halfmoon Bay, has worked in business for 35 years, has owned and operated a catering company, tools and leather hardware, overseen a fishing plant with more than 200 employees, as well as bought and sold companies with partners.
