Displays of appreciation come in all shapes and sizes, and at Sechelt Hospital on Tuesday evening, it came as flashing lights and siren calls.
Fire engines, RCMP cruisers, ambulances and Conservation Officer Service vehicles gave a drive-by salute to the Sunshine Coast’s health-care workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis during shift change at the hospital.
“We won’t be able to sustain it every night like the big city, but we still wanted to show how much we appreciate them all,” said Sunshine Coast RCMP Const. Karen Whitby, referencing various 7 p.m. salutes unfolding daily across the Lower Mainland.
Families of health-care workers were on site – at a distance – to watch the tour, along with nurses, doctors and other staff.
“Everyone’s been working really hard,” said nurse Brenda Rowe, a District of Sechelt councillor, after the parade. “For us to take a moment and pause to feel that love, it fills you up for the next shift.”
Jane Macdonald of the Sechelt Hospital Foundation also showed her appreciation: “Thank you for the virtual hugs and high-fives. We are in this together.”
