Meeting set for Coopers Green boat launch

Residents who wish to weigh in about how the boat launch is used at Coopers Green Park should pencil July 20 onto their calendars.

The online public engagement session will be hosted by Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) on the videoconferencing application Zoom from 6 to 7:30 p.m., according to SCRD chair Lori Pratt.

“We’re there to listen. It’s for anybody who wants to still weigh in with their opinion,” she said.

Pratt will also be meeting with individual groups concerned about boat launch access in advance of that meeting.

SCRD staff have drafted an information sheet about the Halfmoon Bay boat launch, which will be published on the regional district’s website before the July 20 engagement session and a Zoom access link will be posted there also. Pratt expects the document to be ready in about a week and hopes people will read it before weighing in.

Questions about whether commercial operators should be allowed to use the boat ramp and the implications for island residents dependent on it were raised at a June 11 planning committee meeting.

Pratt said she had received more than 60 emails from individuals on the issue – which has remained ambiguous since at least 2013.

Staff will compile the information and opinions shared at the meeting and bring it to the board for consideration.
