Firefighters douse the blaze that sweeps through a boat at anchor in Garden Bay on the morning of Aug. 21.

A boat at anchor near the Garden Bay Marine Park has been destroyed by fire.

Acting Pender Harbour fire chief Jim Cameron said firefighters got the call around 7 a.m. Aug. 21. They were able to get out to the burning vessel with the help of another boater and began trying to douse the blaze, but the boat was already too far gone to save.

The boat eventually sank and the area was boomed off by a crew from the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue station in Pender Harbour to contain any fuel or oil slicks.

Cameron also said with the boat now at the bottom of the bay it’s unlikely they’ll be able to determine the cause of the fire.

There were no reported injuries.
