Liberal candidate Sandra Stoddart-Hansen is a consultant with a long history in the public and private sectors. She also recently completed a term on the BC Ferry Authority board of directors and has been active as a community volunteer.

The 70-year-old and her husband bought a home in Halfmoon Bay and were part- time Coast residents from 1996 to 2011 when they moved to the area permanently.

When asked by Coast Reporter about the biggest change she’s noticed or biggest adjustment she’s made to campaigning because of the pandemic, she said, “With a fixed election date, I would have been out talking to people months before an election. The pandemic has made me take the tough decision not to campaign in a way that puts anyone at risk – therefore, no campaign office, no door knocking and no rallies or public meetings.”

She also said she’s been making a lot more phone calls than a candidate in a typical campaign and has “found it refreshing and encouraging to talk to voters one-on-one over the phone.”

When asked to pick a key issue she’s been hearing on the virtual doorsteps and talk about how she’d tackle it, Stoddart Hansen responded:

“The issue I have heard about most frequently is the inadequacy of our highway.  6,500 people signed a petition in support of a bypass route from the ferry to Sechelt. The NDP said it was not warranted. If elected in a B.C. Liberal government, I have a commitment from our leader that we will begin a first phase of construction of the bypass with a $50-million investment.”

The Liberal platform says if elected they would “review ferry schedules with a goal of hourly service on high-frequency routes.”

Stoddart-Hansen has also said she would push to use the government’s contract with BC Ferries as a mechanism to guarantee improved service.
