Canadian Keegan Messing leads after men's short program at Zagreb Golden Spin

ZAGREB, Croatia — Canadian Keegan Messing is the leader after the men's short program at figure skating's Zagreb Golden Spin. Skating to "Never Tear Us Apart," the 29-year-old scored 90.26 points.

ZAGREB, Croatia — Canadian Keegan Messing is the leader after the men's short program at figure skating's Zagreb Golden Spin.

Skating to "Never Tear Us Apart," the 29-year-old scored 90.26 points. Latvia's Deniss Vasiljevs is second going into the free program with 84.46, while Australian Brendan Kerry is third (84.36).

Messing, who lives in Girdwood, Alaska but has dual citizenship, was sixth at the world championships last spring.

Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro are sixth after the pairs short program, with 61.51 points, while their Canadian teammates Vanessa James and Eric Radford are ninth with 56.75. 

Karina Safina and Luka Berulava of Georgia are the leaders (66.95).

The event is a tuneup for the Canadian championships and Olympic trials in early January in Ottawa.
