The Grade 6/7 athletes took to the gym floor at Elphinstone Secondary for an 18-team competition on Nov. 20 – and for the first time in memory, volleyball powerhouses Gibsons and Cedar Grove schools left the gyms without hardware.
The Davis Bay Tugs boys team won the prestigious Lee & Janice Brown “A” flight trophy in an exciting and tense 25-22 final game against the Gibsons “4” team.
It was the first time Davis Bay won the first-place trophy in the last 30 years of competitions, so it was a historic win for the team.
In another hard-fought match, perennial finalists Roberts Creek, under the guidance of coach Sarah Schutz, defeated Gibsons in the “B” flight final 25-21.
In the “C” flight, the young Ecole du Pacifique Grade 4/5/6 teams hoisted their first volleyball trophy, winning both the finals. The boys defeated West Sechelt 25-20 while the girls took home the consolation final, defeating Gibsons 25-15.
Owen Schutz and his Grade 9/10 students officiated at the all-day event.
The following week, elementary-school volleyball season came to a close with a six-team mixed Grade 4/5 Jamboree hosted by Gibsons Elementary.
December and early January will be a good time for schools to approach coaches for the upcoming basketball season beginning end of January.
