The Chatelech senior girls basketball team extended their five-game winning streak Tuesday night with a hard-fought 52-45 upset win over the Collingwood Cavaliers.

Chatelech jumped out to an early lead with timely baskets and solid defence and led 15-8 after the first quarter. Collingwood fought back in the second quarter but couldn’t close the gap and Chatelech took a 23-17 lead into the second half.

The Cavaliers opened the second half on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 23, but Chatelech didn’t back down and finished the quarter with a 37-29 lead thanks to some gritty point guard play by Sam Fehr. Collingwood kept fighting and closed to within three points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Chatelech girls showed their characteristic grit and tenacity, kept making plays, and put the game away.

Sam Fehr led the way with 22 points and some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, while Audrey Spithoff chipped in 17 points and at least a dozen rebounds, but it was an all-around team effort and everyone contributed to this well-earned win.

With the win, the Eagles have qualified for the regional playoffs next week and will play the top-ranked team in the province, the Mulgrave Titans, in the North Shore league finals on Feb. 9.
