With temperatures set to dip over the next few days, local services are sharing places people can go to stay warm.
In Gibsons, a daytime drop-in warming centre will be available in the Marine Room of the Arts Building on Friday from 1 to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Access is from the back. As well, the cold weather shelter at St. Bart's will be opening early, at 5:30 p.m., during the freezing weather.
District of Sechelt highlighted that RainCity's Sechelt Shelter on Wharf Avenue is open 24 hours a day. As well, warmed public spaces include the library (open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays) and Trail Bay Centre Mall (open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m .to 4 p.m. on Sunday). shishálh Nation will have its board room open for Nation members and guests 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Sunshine Coast Regional District said that through its emergency program it's been in touch with external partners for a sense of bed and shelter space available. "In an instance where these shelters are over capacity, the Sunshine Coast Emergency Program which is an integrated program and includes the Town of Gibsons, District of Sechelt and the shishalh Nation Government District would look at opening warming shelters," communications manager Aidan Buckley said in an email.
Environment Canada is predicting a low of -8C Thursday night, -13C with windchill, and possible flurries. Friday is forecasted to sit at about -8C, -14C with windchill. Saturday is looking a little warmer with a forecast of -5C, and Sunday high is 0C and low is -3C.
