A missed tug 'tie off' damages Sechelt's pedestrian pier

'Unfortunately the tug operator did not untie before attempting to drive off, thereby pulling the float away from the gangway': District of Sechelt.

A tugboat damaged District of Sechelt's pedestrian pier float at Friendship Park the afternoon of June 17.

Coast Reporter was advised by a witness that they saw a tugboat briefly tie up to the floating dock and that at about 3:20 p.m, the tugboat left still tied to the dock. The witness said there were people on the float at the time.

Following that incident, the ramp that connects the float to the concrete main pier became disconnected and the float was secured to the structure with just a rope.

Lindsay Vickers, communications manager for the District of Sechelt advised Coast Reporter by email that "although there is no moorage permitted on the pier or its lower float, a tug tied up to it. Unfortunately the tug operator did not untie before attempting to drive off, thereby pulling the float away from the gangway. All connections etc are being looked at today, above and below water to ensure the security of the float. There is no damage to the structure of the pier. There is a police file."
