Weston brochure draws criticism

A full-colour "re-elect John Weston" brochure that arrived in Sunshine Coast mailboxes March 25 is drawing criticism from Coast residents.

Coast Reporter has received several emails, phone calls and letters to the editor in the past two weeks regarding the brochure. Residents are crying foul after the brochure arrived in the mail while a non-confidence vote was going on in Ottawa, before the Conservative government fell, and was in the hands of residents before the actual election date was set.

Residents who contacted Coast Reporter suggested that it was inappropriate and that Weston and the Conservatives, despite claiming they did not want the election to take place, clearly were preparing for the election as evidenced by the brochure hitting mailboxes a day before the election date was set.

For his part, Weston said he was just being prepared for the election call he knew would be coming.

"Mr. Ignatieff has warned us for the past two months that he would be voting against the budget, and his threat was vindicated. I took his threat seriously," said Weston in an interview with Coast Reporter April 5. "The brochure was paid for by the riding association. I was simply being prepared for the election call. We knew the date that the budget vote or other vote that would trigger a confidence issue, so we were prepared for the election."
