Local member of Parliament John Weston left for Taipei, Taiwan, May 18 to attend the inauguration of President Ma Ying-jeou.
He will be joined by MP's Ron Cannon, Kelowna - Lake Country, Joe Daniel, Don Valley East, and C.S. Leung, Willowdale, as they bring greetings and congratulations to the Taiwanese President. Weston will also present an original painting by West Vancouver artist Michelle Lan as well as a book of greetings signed by Parliamentarians and well-wishers from the riding.
"I'm particularly pleased to be returning to Taiwan for the inauguration of my dear friend, President Ma," said Weston. "We first met when I lived in Taiwan for ten years. I believe the warmth of our friendship aptly reflects the relationship between Canada and Taiwan, a connection that will only grow stronger as we develop our mutual economic and educational interests."
In addition to attending the inauguration, Weston, in co-operation with local schools and post-secondary institutions, will be meeting with educational and foreign affairs officials in Taiwan to promote Canadian educational opportunities in the riding he represents. Weston has had a long-standing role in the promotion of Pacific Rim engagement during which time he has developed many personal friends.
Weston also hopes to meet with Taiwanese families who would like their young people to acquire a Canadian education by attending one of our excellent institutions.
This is a timely trip for Weston as last week, he was elected to chair the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group.
