RCMP are warning the public that the holidays seem to bring an increase in scams and to always be cautious about offers that seem too good to be true.

A Coast resident recently received a letter and convincing looking cheque from a foreign lottery office advising the resident had won a large amount of money; the cheque was supposed to help the resident pay for taxes on his winnings. RCMP are investigating a single-vehicle collision after a loan male occupant crashed his vehicle into the ditch, flipping it onto its roof.

According to RCMP, the driver left the scene prior to police arriving.

On Nov. 15, RCMP responded to the accident on Sechelt Inlet Road, near Sandy Hook Road, after the Sechelt driver crashed his vehicle into a ditch. RCMP spoke to the driver afterwards and determined that he was not injured.

RCMP are continuing their investigation into the matter and are asking any witnesses to contact Const. Chesley Johnson at 604-885-2266 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

RCMP attended a single-vehicle accident one km south of Francis Peninsula Road after a vehicle failed to negotiate a turn and drove across the oncoming lane and into the ditch. No one was on scene when police arrived. The uninjured registered owner was located and she admitted to having lost control of the vehicle. She was issued a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

On Nov. 15, a local business turned in a found wooden container thatheld several items of costume jewelery.The container, which will bekept for three months, has a word carved on thetop.The owner may claim with a detailed description of the container and the items inside by contacting the Sechelt detachment at 604-885-2266.

Overnight on Nov. 16, a suspected thief broke into a business in the 5600 block of Teredo Street by throwing a rock through a glass door to gain entry. The thief stole some cash, but other valuables were left intact.

Between Nov. 15 and 16, a suspected thief stole a boat from Port Mellon. The 14' Hurston fibreglass craft boat has "1618" printed on the side, and a 60 HP Mercury outboard motor attached. The boat was recovered on Nov. 18, run aground in Roberts Creek.

RCMP attended asingle-vehicle accident on the corner of Trail Avenue and Surf Circle after a passerby noted a heavily damaged vehicle in the southbound ditch with deployed air bags, but no occupants. The uninjured, sober driver was located and he advised he'd fled the scene because he doesn't have a valid driver's licence. The driver was issued violation tickets for driving without a licence and for failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

A possible impaired driver was reported on Highway 101 near Veterans Road after a witness noticed the vehicle speeding, then slowing down, and weaving from side to side. The witness provided the licence plate,descriptionand direction of travel. Police located the vehicle and driver on School Road and the driver, who was not impaired, admitted she had been reaching for a bag of pretzels. The driver was cautioned on her driving behaviour.

Early on Nov. 20, a vandal damaged a vehicle parked in the 400 block of Aldersprings Road. The vandal removed the valve stem off a tire andbroke off the passenger side mirror and gas cap cover.

A possible impaired driving was reported to be disembarking off a ferry at Langdale after a witness saw the suspect consuming alcohol on-board. The witness provided a vehicle and driver description and the licence plate number. An officer located and stopped the suspect vehicle and spoke with the driver who admitted to consuming a small amount of alcohol. Two roadside alcohol screening tests were given to the male, resulting in a fail and a warn result. The male was issued a three-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for three days.
