Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Nov. 9 to 16:
While conducting patrols near Highway 101 and Wharf Road in Sechelt, two officers witnessed a vehicle roll out of a parking lot, drift across Wharf Road, narrowly missing another moving vehicle, and hit a planter before coming to a stop. The officers located two toddlers inside, including one who was holding onto the steering wheel. Both were unhurt and the vehicle was undamaged. The parent, who came out from a business after the vehicle had come to a stop, advised the vehicle had been turned off, but the keys had been left in the ignition. The parent was warned about the hazards of leaving young children unattended in a vehicle, and issued a violation ticket for having an unsecured motor vehicle.
On Nov. 14, a male shoplifter was witnessed leaving a business in the 5500 block of Highway 101 and driving off in a vehicle. A witness provided police with a vehicle description and plate number and police attended the registered owner's residence. A family member answered the door and advised the male would be out shortly, but instead, he fled the house through the back door. The male was located and arrested for theft. The stolen items were returned to the business.
Overnight on Nov. 8/9, a thief stole a tailgate off a black pick-up truck that had been parked at a residence in the 300 block of Cochrane Road. The tailgate is easily lifted out, so there was no damage to the rest of the vehicle. The tailgate has a 3.5" diameter dimple dent in the top left quarter which has been painted black to match. If you have any information about this theft, please contact RCMP at 604-885-2266, reference file 10-8765.
Overnight on Nov. 11/12, a thief stole three highway construction signs out of a truck parked in the 600 block of North Fletcher Road. The signs, which read "Men and Equipment Ahead," "Prepare to Stop" and "Flagger Ahead" were marked on the back with a "Walk the Line" sign stencilled in pink spray paint. Overnight on Nov. 10/11, a thief stole a new red and grey Craftsman gas lawn mower with bag from a residence in the 6200 block of Norwest Bay Road. The lawnmower was left by the side of the house.
On Nov. 11, a resident in the 1500 block of Cypress Way called to report a mother bear and cub that had visited the home at least six times in one evening. The bears were attracted to a deep freeze on a porch. Police assisted the homeowner in moving the attractant inside, and reminded them to remove any possible food sources from the yard.
On the afternoon of Nov. 13, a youth attended a business in the 5600 block of Inlet Avenue and when he opened the door, the alarm was unexpectedly set off. The youth remained outside the building, and pushed a doorbell, which went unanswered, as it appeared the business was actually closed for the day. The youth called the RCMP to advise of the situation and waited for an officer to attend. The officer determined that the business had left the door improperly secured and thanked the youth and his friends for their calm and thoughtful actions.
A late night single-vehicle accident occurred in the 2500 block of Highway 101 after a northbound vehicle lost control and ended up rolling over in the ditch. The driver and lone occupant trapped inside the vehicle was released by the fire department, and taken to hospital for minor injuries.
