Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for the week of Sept. 21 to Sept. 28:

On Sept. 22, RCMP observed a vehicle run through a red light. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver displayed signs of impairment. The driver provided a breath sample into a roadside screening device and the result was a "fail" indicating the driver was operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol.

Under the new provincial legislation the driver was issued an immediate 90-day driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

The driver was also charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for running the red light and another charge for having open liquor inside the vehicle contrary to the Liquor Licensing Act. ?

There are also various significant fines and programs that the driver will be responsible for before their driver's license can be reinstated.

A suspected impaired driver was located after a police officer stopped him for making an illegal left hand turn on a red light in the 900 block of Gibsons Way. The "N" driver, who subsequently failed a Breathalyzer test, had earlier in the evening been ticketed for excessive speed in Roberts Creek. He was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, his vehicle was impounded for 30 days and he was given violation tickets for improper turn at intersection and possessing open liquor in a vehicle.

Separate witnesses reported a suspected impaired driver heading into a business in Wilson Creek. The driver was seen weaving into oncoming traffic and almost missing an entranceway into the parking lot. An RCMP officer located the driver in his vehicle and determined him to be impaired by medication. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and his vehicle was towed.

A police officer observed a vehicle driving very slowly on Highway 101 before turning left onto Mills Road. The officer pulled the vehicle over and detected the smell of marijuana. The new driver admitted to having smoked marijuana with his passenger, and to also consuming alcohol. The driver blew a "warn" on the roadside-screening device, so was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition, and a violation ticket for drive contrary to restrictions.

On Sept 21, a staffer caught a shoplifter at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way after the shoplifter left the business with the item in his backpack. The youth advised he'd stolen the item on a dare. He was released to his parent, and the matter is being referred to the Restorative Justice program.

On Sept 22, a shoplifter was reported at a business in the 800 block of Gibsons Way after she left the premises with an unpaid item on her person. A witness provided a detailed description of the suspect, as well as the licence plate of the vehicle she left in. The business did not wish to pursue charges, but requested the suspect be warned and she has been banned from business. ??

Sometime between Sept. 22 and 23, thieves broke into a number of cabins on Thormanby Island. The thieves used force to gain entry, and made off with two generators, including one Honda generator. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266, reference file 10-7580 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

?? On Sept. 25, a bear was reported swimming in a pool located in the 600 block of North Road. The bear, who has been reported doing this before, then wandered into a building before leaving the scene. Police were busy on priority calls so were unable to attend, but Conservation was advised.

Sometime between Sept. 24 and 27, a suspected thief cut a lock off a delivery truck parked in the 1100 block of Highway 101 and stole a small amount of merchandise.

On the afternoon of Sept. 27, a suspected thief stole a variety of hockey equipment off a deck in the 7800 block of Lohn Road. The stolen equipment included Reebok junior goalie pads, Vaughn blocker, gloves, and chest pad, and I-Tech helmet and a hockey stick.
