Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for the week of Aug. 20 to 27:
On Aug. 20, a two-vehicle collision occurred in a parking lot in the 4300 block of Highway 101 in Sechelt, after the first vehicle backed very quickly out of its parking stall and collided with the front bumper of a second parked vehicle.
No one was injured and the second vehicle sustained minor damage, but the first vehicle's rear bumper was pushed back into the tires and was towed from the scene. Police will be requesting a driver's licence review for the driver of the first vehicle.
On Aug. 20, police witnessed a vehicle speeding and initiated a traffic stop on Lillies Lake Road in Madeira Park. The lone driver and occupant exhibited signs of intoxication and advised police she had been drinking all day and had just come back from purchasing more alcohol. The driver also stated she'd taken her last drink 15 minutes prior to driving. The class 7L driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol-screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impoundment, and two violation tickets for driving contrary to restrictions (alcohol in body and no supervisor).
Overnight on Aug. 21, a thief gained entry into an unlocked vehicle parked in the 800 block of Gower Point Road in Gibsons, and stole some tempered glass and related hardware. No other theft or damage was reported.
On Aug. 22, a Coast resident reported being a victim of fraud after discovering a large amount of money missing from his bank account. The resident contacted his bank who advised an unknown person had posed as the resident and accessed the account fraudulently. Further investigation revealed that the resident had opened up a suspicious "phishing" email and clicked on a link embedded in the email. By doing so, it appears the hacker was able to access the resident's work computer and gain enough personal information to create a profile allowing access to the resident's finances. On Aug. 22, a witness reported a possible impaired driver driving on Sechelt Inlet Road near Tuwanek Place in Sechelt. Police located the vehicle a short distance away and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication, admitted to consuming alcohol a short time before driving. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol-screening test and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
On Aug. 22, two males were caught by staff stealing a road construction sign on Gibsons Way near School Road in Gibsons. The sign was recovered and the intoxicated suspects left the area on foot. Police located the suspects and spoke to them about the attempted theft. The suspects advised they'd bought the sign "off a kid for five bucks."
The suspects were warned about possession of stolen property and advised to exercise common sense in future.
Overnight on Aug. 23, a vandal sprayed graffiti on several walls, buildings and roadways in the 5600 block of Wharf Road in Sechelt and the 5600 block of Inlet Avenue in Sechelt using fluorescent orange spray paint.
It is believed the same suspect struck again on Aug. 23 around 9 a.m. in the 5600 block of Inlet Avenue in Sechelt spray painting a vehicle with fluorescent orange paint. Anyone with any information about these mischiefs is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266.
On the evening of Aug. 24, two youths in Hoodies grabbed a bag of food being handed over to a customer in a drive-thru restaurant in the 5600 block of Highway 101 in Sechelt. The thieves fled the scene with the purloined food on foot.
