Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following this week:
On Oct. 16 police witnessed a vehicle speeding northbound on Lower Road. The vehicle, which was noted going more than 20 km over the posted speed limit, was pulled over and the driver was found to possess an invalid driver's licence.
The driver was also a driving prohibition candidate from a previous incident.
The driver was issued an appearance notice for court, his driver's licence was seized and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
On Oct. 17, a possible impaired driver was reported near Jack Road heading north on Highway 101. The witness provided a licence plate number, vehicle and driver description and advised the vehicle was inconsistent in its speed and was swerving in and out of its lane. Police located the vehicle in Sechelt and spoke with the driver, who was not intoxicated. However, the driver did admit he had been eating while driving and may not have been fully focused on the road. The driver was warned about driving while distracted.
On Oct. 18, a single-vehicle collision occurred in the 5500 block of Highway 101 after a vehicle parked in front of a building suddenly accelerated and crashed through a set of doors. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident. The driver advised police that she had mistaken the gas pedal for the brake. The driver was taken to hospital for assessment and a driver's licence review has been requested.
On Oct. 18, a single-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 101 near Orange Road. The driver and lone occupant was able to exit the vehicle on his own, and advised that he'd been driving towards Sechelt when his brakes locked on the wet road. He skidded into the on-coming lane and went into the ditch, knocking down a Hydro pole, bringing power lines down across the highway and causing a large grid power outage. The driver sustained minor injuries. Speed relative to conditions is believed to have been a factor.
On Oct. 20, police witnessed a vehicle speeding east on North Road near Reed Road in Gibsons. The vehicle, which also had non-working taillights, was stopped near Stewart Road. The driver was found to be heavily intoxicated and failed two roadside alcohol-screening tests. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
On Oct. 21, a witness reported a possible impaired driver on Highway 101 near Norwest Bay Road in Sechelt after the vehicle was seen weaving all over the road, slowing up and speeding erratically. The witness was able to provide the licence plate number and vehicle and driver description. Police pulled the suspect vehicle a short distance away and determined the driver to be intoxicated. The male driver failed two roadside alcohol-screening tests and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.
Between Oct. 20 and 21, a thief broke into a residence in the 5000 block of Sherman Lane in Halfmoon Bay. Access appears to have been through an unlocked door. The thief stole cash, a laptop computer, costume jewelry, gold and silver chains and a brown stone pendant on a chord.
Early on Oct. 22, an unknown male suspect was found rummaging through a vehicle parked near Hupit Street and Mission Road in Sechelt. The suspect who fled on foot, was described as a deep voiced 40-something white male with average height, build, and frizzy hair, dressed in jeans and a jean or blue coloured jacket.
The suspect stole a cell phone, iPod and chargers from the unlocked vehicle. A theft of a cell phone from another unlocked vehicle in the area was also reported.
Overnight on Oct. 22, a thief gained entry into two unlocked vehicles parked in the 4400 block of Stalashen Drive in Wilson Creek. The thief stole a lottery ticket and a necklace.
Overnight on Oct. 21, a suspect broke into a residence in the 300 block of Shoal Lookout in Gibsons. The suspect tried to pry the deadbolt from the door, but when that failed, the suspect then pried the door frame, broke the glass sidelight and gained entry. The suspect rifled through a desk and bedside table, but nothing appears to have been stolen.
