Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for May 22 to 25:
On May 22, a shoplifter was caught on surveillance video stealing several items of clothing and a pair of sandals from a business in the 5700 block of Cowrie Street in Sechelt. The female suspect took the items into a changing room and cut off the tags before leaving the premises. The file is still under investigation.
On May 22, a motorist heading southbound on Highway 101 near Bay Road reported a possible impaired driver. The motorist managed to obtain the licence plate number and an officer was able to locate and stop the vehicle on near Pratt Road in Gibsons. The driver, who exhibited no signs of intoxication, advised the officer that he sometimes speeds because he can't read the numbers on the dashboard. A request for a driver evaluation has been sent to the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles.
On May 22, a possible impaired driver was reported aftertwo males were witnessed drinking alcohol on a Langdale-bound ferry before getting into a vehicle. An officer stopped the vehicle shortly after the ferry arrived, but when the officer approached the vehicle, one of the males was in the passenger seat and the other was in the back seat. Both men were arrested for obstruction, as they would not state who had been driving the vehicle, and once the witness confirmed the driver's identity, the male in the back seat was arrested for impaired driving as well. The vehicle was impounded and the passenger took a cab home. The file is still under investigation.
A Coast resident who started an on-line friendship with a male, was asked by the male to cash a "small" money order for him and wire the funds to an address in Dubai. The resident took the money order, which was from a major bank in "New York, Ont.", to a local branch, which confirmed the money order was fraudulent. This is a common type of scam. RCMP remind people again to be very wary whensomeone asks you to cash cheques and sendfunds to them elsewhere.
On May 23, a shoplifter stole a yellow pair of Billabong shorts from a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way. The shoplifter, a blonde female in her 20's, of average height and build, was wearing shorts, sandals and carried a brown purse andfled the scene in a red vehicle. Police are reviewing surveillance footage.
On May 23, a shoplifter, described as a slim white femaleapproximately 15-years-old with pink hair, wearing black sweat shirt and grey pants,stole two bottles of alcohol from a business in the 5700 block of Teredo Street in Sechelt before fleeing on foot. Police are reviewing surveillance footage.
On May 24, an officer initiated a traffic stop with a driver she recognized from an earlierlicenced premises checkin Lower Gibsons. The driver, who advised he'd had a couple of beers, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test, which resulted in a "FAIL". The vehicle was towed and the driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and an administrative driving prohibition.
On May 24, vandals damaged a campsite at Homesite Creek Campground by carving into the new picnic tables, running over a table and tearing up an area ofnewly planted grass.Police are following up with possible suspects.
On May 24, a multiple-vehicle collision occurredin a parking lot in the 900 block of Gibsons Way after a driver lost control of her vehicle and crashed into four parked vehicles. The driver, who was not impaired in any way, was taken to hospital to be checked over. A driver evaluation request has been recommended.
