Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for March 5 to March 12:
On March 5, police stopped a vehicle on Highway 101 at Henry Road in Gibsons after the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. The driver of the vehicle admitted that she and her passenger had smoked marijuana prior to driving. The driver was given a standard field sobriety test and based on the results, was given a 24-hour driving prohibition.
Police also located and destroyed a small amount of drugs and paraphernalia. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for not having valid vehicle insurance and her vehicle was towed.
On March 6, a local resident received a scam call from a female purporting to be the resident's granddaughter. The suspect told a story about being in jail for impaired driving and needing money and also asked the resident not to tell any of the other family about her predicament.
Fortunately, the savvy resident challenged the caller until the caller hung up. The resident believes the scammer may have gleaned personal details about her and her granddaughter from social media accounts. On March 6, a thief stole some jewelry and a jar full of change from a residence in the 1100 block of Neilson Road in Elphinstone. It appears the suspect opened an unsecured window and grabbed the items from the sill without actually entering the house.
On March 7, police witnessed an erratic driver swerving over the centre line while heading northbound on Highway 101 in Davis Bay. The officer activated his lights and initiated a u-turn at which point the suspect made a sharp turn up Heather Road without signalling.
A witness called to assist police in locating the vehicle, however police were unable to locate the vehicle. Police found the vehicle a short while later on Wharf Road and conducted a traffic stop.
The driver admitted he had been the same driver observed in Davis Bay, and was given a roadside alcohol-screening test. The driver failed and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 90 days.
The driver was also charged with failing to stop for police.
Just after midnight on March 8, a thief broke into a business in the 5500 block of Shorncliffe Avenue in Sechelt by smashing a window to gain entry. The thief stole an older model Apple Macbook with white plastic casing and "CSF SD93" engraved on the front cover, as well as a charger.
Overnight on March 9, vandals damaged vehicle windows, exterior lights and vinyl siding at several homes (in the 6400 block of Norwest Bay Road, the 1500 block of Grandview Road, and the 1400 block Bonniebrook Heights Road) by shooting off pellet guns. One resident heard two male voices, but the suspects fled on foot before any description could be obtained.
On March 9, a witness reported a driver smoking what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette leaving the ferry in Langdale. Police located and stopped the vehicle and noted the odour of marijuana and alcohol on the driver.
The driver, who admitted to marijuana consumption, was given a roadside alcohol-screening test. The driver was issued a violation ticket for possession of liquor in a motor vehicle and a 24-hour driving prohibition for drug impairment.
On March 9, a pedestrian and vehicle incident occurred on Sunnycrest Road near Gibsons Way after a vehicle making a left turn out of a parking lot struck a pedestrian in a motorized wheelchair.
The driver, who was neither impaired nor speeding, did not see the wheelchair-bound pedestrian until he yelled after getting caught up in the driver's side wheel well. The driver stopped immediately and managed to extricate the man and his wheelchair and moved him to safety.
Paramedics were called to assist the male who sustained a serious cut.
The driver was issued a violation ticket for fail to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk.
On March 10, a multiple vehicle collision occurred in the 600 block of Bay Road in Davis Bay after a driver entered a narrow cul-de-sac and struck a retaining wall. When the driver backed up to leave the cul-de-sac, he struck an empty parked car, pushing it into a second parked car behind it. The driver tried to back up again and backed into a third parked vehicle.
Police attended and spoke with the driver who did not appear intoxicated, but admitted to consuming a couple of drinks the night before. A roadside alcohol-screening test was issued with negative results. The driver was issued a violation ticket for driving without due care and a driver's licence review has been requested.
