Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for the week of March 5 to 12:

On March 5, thieves cut through a fence at a business in the 4300 block of Hilltop Road in Sechelt and siphoned gas from a vehicle parked on the property. The suspects are also believed to have stolen a jerry can from a neighbouring business. Police are reviewing surveillance footage.

On March 6, a three-vehicle collision occurred in the inner southbound lane in the 5600 block of Highway 101 after a vehicle stopped behind another vehicle, which had stopped to allow a pedestrian to jaywalk across the highway.

A third vehicle rear-ended the stopped vehicle sending the second vehicle into the first.

The driver of third vehicle told police she was distracted and was not looking where she was going, causing her to collide with the vehicle in front of her.

The driver was issued a violation ticket for driving without consideration. No serious injuries or vehicle damage were reported.

A suspicious incident was reported after a Coast resident received a text message stating, "OK, I've hid the body, now what?"

The resident did not recognize the number the message came from. RCMP tracked the phone number to a Vancouver address. Vancouver Police assisted in locating the suspect, who admitted he'd sent the text message to a random number as a prank. The male was warned about his behaviour and possible consequences.

Overnight on March 8, a thief gained entry into an unlocked vehicle parked in the 6300 block of Samron Road in Sechelt and stole an older model iPod and an assortment of kickboxing equipment (pads and headgear).

A Coast resident received a scam call from a female purporting to be his granddaughter. The female told her "grandfather" that she'd been in a car accident and was in jail near Montreal, and that the charges would be dropped if she paid for the damage she'd caused. Then, a male called the resident, who claimed to be the granddaughter's lawyer and that he would arrange bail. The resident was then given instructions to wire money through Western Union to an agent of the lawyer. Fortunately, the local Western Union office staff felt the transaction was suspicious and delayed it, giving the resident time to confirm with this actual granddaughter that she was fine and nowhere near Montreal. The resident was able to recover all his money. The police would like to remind the public to be wary of any similar schemes and to educate themselves by going to web sites such as www.phonebusters.com.

RCMP attended to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Cowrie Street and Inlet Avenue in Sechelt. One of the vehicles sustained significant front-end damage, but the second vehicle was still drivable. No injuries were reported. The driver of the second vehicle admitted to running a stop sign, and was issued a violation ticket for failing to obey a stop sign.

Police continue to receive complaints about drivers ignoring stop signs along the detour route through Davis Bay, particularly at Geer and Havies roads.

Motorists are reminded that all traffic signs, including stop signs, must still be obeyed, even on a detour.

On March 11, a possible impaired driver was reported southbound on Highway 101 near Burton Road in Gibsons after the vehicle was witnessed having trouble staying in its lane and braking erratically.

An officer located the vehicle at the Langdale ferry terminal and spoke with the driver, who was not impaired, but stated he had been sightseeing with his family. The driver was warned to pay more attention to his driving.

Sometime between March 10 and 11, a thief stole a drive shaft from the undercarriage of a GMC Sierra that had been parked in the 1800 block of Hall Road in Sechelt. The thief also stole the hardware used to mount the drive shaft.

On March 11, a thief gained entry into a vehicle parked in the 600 block of Franklin Road in Gibsons and stole a 4th generation iPod. The purple iPod had a hard clear plastic case, and had been kept in plain view.
