The new community hall start to take shape at Halfmoon Bay's Connor Park.

There’s a new look at Halfmoon Bay’s Connor Park, ch’emalaḵ, and it is one of progress.

On June 30, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) released an update on the Area B’s (Halfmoon Bay) new community hall.

Foundation walls for the $2.7 million, 205 square metre (2,200 square foot) structure are up. The release noted that in the two months since the construction start, the septic system has been upgraded, a new water service, fire hydrant and hydro service pole have been installed and the footings have been poured.

“An older shed structure on the southwest side of the site, previously used as a washroom, has been dismantled, and the pit toilet has been fully decommissioned. This was done in a manner to ensure trees bordering the existing pit were not disrupted,” the release stated.

The statement advised park users to anticipate temporary changes to the location’s parking as construction continues.

With an extension approved for the project’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program grant, the SCRD said in the release work on the hall “is moving forward on-time with the hall due to be available for the community by Summer 2026." More details are available on the SCRD’s “Let’s Talk” page dedicated to the project.

In a related item, on June 12 the SCRD board released a decision made at an earlier in-camera meeting authorizing a 10-year License to Occupy agreement for Area B’s former community hall at Coopers Green Park with the Halfmoon Bay Community Association. A 10-year renewal option for the agreement was also approved.

That park and hall have been owned and managed by the SCRD since 1985. The regional government has committed to spending up to $633,238 for Coopers Green park enhancements, including improved washroom facilities, with construction slated to begin this year.
