Victoria Day long weekend muted on Coast

Call volumes appeared not to spike for first responders and bylaw officers on the Coast

First responders work at the scene of a motorcycle crash on Friday, May 21.

A motorcycle crash and illegal beach fires were among some of the incidents that occurred over the Victoria Day long weekend, but call volumes appeared not to spike for first responders and bylaw officers on the Coast.

Vehicles on Highway 101 slowed to a crawl on Friday evening when alternating single-lane traffic took effect after a motorcycle ended up in the ditch of the westbound lane at Conrad Road in Roberts Creek close to 6:15 p.m. The driver was transported to hospital in serious condition.

The Gibsons and District Volunteer Fire Department responded to two beach fires, which are illegal in the municipality, while rural fire departments remained quiet, save for a couple of medical calls in Halfmoon Bay.

The Sechelt Volunteer Fire Department responded to seven calls over the weekend, which Fire Chief Trevor Pike said is “a slightly higher call volume” than for an average weekend, however none of those calls were directly related to activities taking place because of Victoria Day, he said.

On Tuesday, District of Sechelt bylaw officers were following up on two short-term rental complaints, one illegal camping complaint and two COVID-19 complaints, said the district’s communication manager, Julie Rogers, who said the volume of calls and complaints was “about average” for weekends.

Gibsons was “very quiet” in terms of bylaw complaints over the weekend, said the town’s enforcement officer Sue Booth, with one complaint concerning loud music.

Two dog-related complaints were tallied at the SCRD – meeting the weekend average of two or three complaints for the jurisdiction.
