Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating a mischief that occurred off a Forest Service Road in Pender Harbour on Feb. 24 that saw more than $35,000 damage done to BC Hydro poles.
The following day, Feb. 25, RCMP received the report of mischief from BC Hydro crews, after they had discovered several hydro poles on fire the night previous when they responded to a power disruption in the area.
Hydro workers told police that they had responded to a line disruption the night previous on a Forest Service Road near Menacher Road, which took place between 6 and 7 p.m.
"Upon arriving, hydro crews discovered hydro poles on fire. Crews were forced to wait for the fires to burn down due to the possibility of electrocution," said RCMP spokes person Cpl. Steve Chubey. "The electrical current had caused the ground around the affected area to turn to glass. Police discovered several spent shotgun and .22 calibre shells in the area, and concluded that vandals had shot up the hydro poles, which ultimately caused the fire. A vehicle was also located in the area, along with several discarded beer bottles. The vehicle was towed and the registered owner contacted."
Chubey said BC Hydro crews estimate the cost of repairing the damage to exceed $35,000.
"RCMP have identified a suspect and the file is currently under investigation," added Chubey.
