Two people were taken to hospital early Saturday night, Aug. 1 after sustaining minor burns after hot oil spilled from an outdoor fryer.

Sechelt assistant fire chief Trevor Pike initially said the cause of the burns and subsequent fire at a home in Selma Park, was due to a barbecue being placed to close to a home, but on Tuesday morning, Aug. 4, Pike said the fire was not from a barbecue.

"Once we were able to get close to the scene, we found out exactly what the cause was," said Pike. "It was an outdoor deep fryer. A turkey was dropped into it and the hot oil overflowed burning one adult on their foot. The hot oil started a small grass fire, which then spread to the outside of the home. One other person received minor burns trying to put out the fire."

Firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 6 p.m. and were able to put out the fire and contain the blaze to the outside of the home.

He said both of the adults who were injured were taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment and were later released. The occupants of the home were allowed back inside later Saturday evening.
