People needing a break from the heat wave bearing down on the Sunshine Coast can seek respite at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre and Roberts Creek Community Hall.

In Sechelt, the cooling room will be open to the public, with water available on Saturday, June 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A maximum of 12 people will be allowed in the room to adhere with public health protocols related to COVID-19.

Sechelt will also be keeping its eight water fountains open for public use in Davis Bay, Mission Park, Friendship Park, Spirit Square, Hackett Park, the skateboard park and in Kinnikinnick Park.

Roberts Creek Community Hall will be open as an emergency cooling centre on Sunday and Monday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Physical distancing and masks are required and the maximum capacity is 50 people. Leashed and crated pets are welcome.

In Gibsons, two water stations have been established in addition to its public water fountains at Dougall Park and Armours Beach.

Bottled water will be available at the two water stations, located at the bus stop in front of Winegarden Park at 354 Gower Point Rd. and at the bus stop in front of Elphinstone Secondary School at 840 Gibsons Way.

Those stations will be operating “for the next several days,” according to a release.

As with the rest of the province, the Sunshine Coast is facing extreme heat until at least next Wednesday. Daytime highs are expected to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius, according to a heat warning issued by Environment Canada.
