Unattended candles likely cause of house fire

Sechelt firefighters were called into action yet again Tuesday night, this time to a blaze in Wilson Creek.

Sechelt firefighters were called into action yet again Tuesday night, this time to a blaze in Wilson Creek.

Arriving on scene at Hall Road in Wilson Creek, 23 firefighters found a house fully engulfed in flames, and two houses and the forest adjacent to the house in danger of the fire. Firefighters concentrated on saving the secondary structures while containing the house fire. Those structures were saved, but the house on fire was lost and some damage was done to garden sheds, a workshop and to the forest.

According to acting Fire Chief Trevor Pike, the home-owner who alerted emergency personnel reported the cause of the fire. The lone occupant said lit candles caught the curtains on fire and when the fire became too much for her to put out, she called for help and escaped unharmed. No injuries were reported and though not considered a suspicious fire, an investigation by RCMP is ongoing.
