An 18-year-old man was injured Nov. 16 when the van he was driving went off Hwy.101. The accident happened around 11 p.m. near Roberts Creek Road.

Bruce Searle, chief of the Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department, said the driver was returning home from Sechelt when his van went off the road, hit a tree, spun around and hit a hydro pole.

Volunteer firefighter Andy Dube heard the crash from his home nearby and immediately went to the fire hall to notify other firefighters and prepare to respond. The firefighters got the driver out of the van by removing the rear door and sliding a spine board under him. Searle said it was lucky the driver's injuries were not more serious.

"I believe he had a broken ankle and a broken collarbone," said Searle. "He was actually really lucky. The vehicle was badly deformed by hitting the tree."

Pedestrian struckShortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday night, Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a struck pedestrian at the intersection of Trail Avenue and Dolphin Street in Sechelt.

An 18-year-old female was crossing Trail Avenue in a crosswalk when a pick-up truck travelling south along Trail hit her, throwing her towards the curb. The driver immediately stopped and provided medical attention to the injured woman until ambulance personnel arrived. She was taken to St. Mary's Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

"Poor street lighting, heavy rain and road glare made visibility and driving difficult for motorists," said Const. Kurt Rosenberg. "Police remind motorists to reduce speed in poor weather conditions and to anticipate pedestrians where crosswalks exist. Slower speeds equal quicker reaction times."
