Trial set for break in suspect

A trial date has been set for a 40-year-old Sunshine Coast man facing charges for an alleged break-in to the Eagle Ridge Veterinary Hospital in Sechelt.

Sunshine Coast RCMP arrested Malcolm James Strybos on Jan. 4 after police received a report of a man who allegedly forced his way into the clinic just as a female employee was in the process of closing the clinic for the day.

According to RCMP, following his arrest and first court appearance, Strybos was released on a recognizance and was charged with break and enter, robbery and breach of undertaking. Strybos is to abide by several strict conditions, which include a curfew and drug and alcohol conditions and was mandated to attend a treatment centre in the Lower Mainland. He will appear again in Sechelt provincial court on Sept. 5 for a trial confirmation hearing for his Oct. 30 scheduled trial date.

Dusty Road stabbing

A 27-year-old Sunshine Coast man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose following his arrest in connection to an alleged stabbing Jan. 9 in Sechelt.

Christopher Thomas Johnson is currently in custody at Fraser Regional Correctional facility and is set to appear in court again on Feb. 7.

RCMP spoke to the alleged stabbing victim after St. Mary's Hospital staff initially reported the injured party on Jan. 9.

"Police spoke with the victim who advised that his stepson had stabbed him with a knife following an argument," said Cpl. Steve Chubey. "The victim told police that his stepson threatened to kill himself, police and other family members."

On the afternoon of Jan. 9, police attended the Dusty Road residence to investigate and were met by the suspect, armed with a knife, who fled on foot after threatening to kill police. Johnson was arrested later in the day after a short police chase and a two-hour police negotiation.

Sinku Drive stabbing

Three Sunshine Coast men have been charged with various offences following an alleged stabbing on Jan. 11 on Sinku Drive in Sechelt.

According to RCMP, Evan Virgil Jeffries has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and was released on an undertaking with no alcohol and no contact conditions. Jeffries made his first court appearance on Jan. 25 and is back in court Feb. 8.

Robert Albert Paul, who is the alleged stabbing victim, has been charged with uttering threats and assault and was released on an undertaking with no alcohol and no contact conditions. He first appeared on Jan. 18 and is back in court Feb. 8

Tyler Augustine Jackson was charged with assault and was also released on an undertaking with no alcohol and no contact conditions. He too first appeared on Jan. 18 and will be back in court on Feb. 8. All three men were given time to obtain council for their next court appearances.

"Police attended the residence and learned that the suspect had been drinking with two other men and was trying to evict the men from his residence, when the two men allegedly attacked the suspect," said Chubey in a news release following the incident. "The suspect stabbed one of the men in the face, narrowly missing his eye, in an attempt to ward off the attackers. As a result, police arrested all three men, who were all highly intoxicated."
