Town makes George documents public

The Town of Gibsons has posted the development application and supporting documents for the George Hotel on its website.

The Town of Gibsons has posted the development application and supporting documents for the George Hotel on its website.

The application for the waterfront hotel and convention centre has yet to come before council for consideration, but the documents are being shown ahead of the formal process "because of the considerable public interest in this proposal," the Town said on its website.

The link can be found at www.gibsons.ca by clicking on "The George (DA)" in the right index box.

The Town received the application and associated studies in February.

"A review of the materials is being conducted by staff and will be followed up by a report to council in April outlining the next steps," the website said. "As part of council's commitment to maintaining a clear and transparent decision-making process, opportunities for public input will be provided this spring."

In the project outline, an economic benefits summary predicts The George at build-out will generate about $1 million annually in property taxes and more than $87 million over 50 years.

Employing about 130 people at an average income of $40,000 a year, the hotel will pay more than $5.2 million in annual wages and create 245 person years of construction work, worth more than $23.8 million.

Annual conference and tourism-related spending in Gibsons is projected at $7.9 million.

The hotel will draw an estimated 32,000 visitors a year, create a new social and cultural hub in the Landing, and increase marine tourism, which will create more business for local marine industries, the summary said.

Also viewable are project drawings, a traffic study, smart development checklist, and environmental and geotechnical assessments.

The hotel is proposed for the corner of Gower Point Road and Winn Road.
