Time is running out for the public to provide suggestions for the contents of a time capsule that will be buried to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD).
The stainless steel box, currently on display in the lobby of the SCRD office on Field Road, will be sealed on Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. for burial outside the building. The public is invited to join members of the SCRD Board of Directors and staff at a ceremony to watch the capsule be sealed.
The time capsule will contain cultural and historical items from the Sunshine Coast, including objects representing the region as it is today. Ideas can be submitted at the SCRD office or emailed to [email protected]
“The contents of the capsule will feature artifacts from the Town of Gibsons, District of Sechelt and the Sechelt and Squamish First Nations,” said SCRD chair Garry Nohr. “The capsule holds treasures that are testament of our commitment to work collectively and collaboratively.”
The SCRD was formed in 1967 and is one of 27 regional districts in British Columbia, establishing partnerships between electoral areas and member municipalities.
The SCRD’s 50th anniversary will be celebrated throughout the year with a few special projects including the preservation of a 25-foot totem pole that stands outside the SCRD office, a photo contest highlighting SCRD parks and an anniversary webpage that can be viewed at www.scrd.ca/50th-anniversary
