Service has been restored for Telus cell phone customers in Sechelt, but the company is still trying to figure out what happened on Monday.

Sometime in the morning on Nov. 4 damage was done to one of the fibres in the Telus network causing some cell phones in Sechelt to lose service completely, while other cell phones had intermittent service and experienced dropped calls. Some Telus cell phone customers also reported not being able to access their phone messages during the day.

Telus repair crews tried to fix the problem from a remote location in Vancouver, but in the afternoon they realized the issue was at the Sechelt tower site. Crews then boarded the ferry and travelled to Sechelt.

After many hours on site cell phone service was restored just before 10:30 p.m. Telus communications spokesperson Liz Sauve said in an interview Tuesday morning.

It was a damaged fibre and they were able to fix the fibre we're just not sure what caused the damage at this point, Sauve said.

She also couldn't say if the issue was related to the new fibre optic service being pitched by Telus on the Coast.

I don't know technically, she said, noting she would ask.

Sauve was also unsure if people would be compensated for their loss of service on Nov. 4.

I'll have to follow up on that, she said adding she would let Coast Reporter know as soon as possible.
