Teachers give strike notice

B.C. teachers filed 72-hour strike notice on Aug. 31 in order to increase pressure on the province to bargain, according to the British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF).

Contract talks between the teachers and the province have stalled and BCTF president Susan Lambert hopes the strike notice will urge the employer back to the bargaining table with a new mandate to negotiate.

The strike notice issued Wednesday night means phase one of the teachers' job action will start when school is back in session Sept. 6.

Phase one includes a ceasing of administrative tasks such as filling out forms, collecting data, meeting with principals or other administrators, supervising on playgrounds or writing report cards.

School District 46 superintendent of schools Patrick Bocking issued a statement saying the school district will ensure students are supervised during phase one of job action.

"In spite of job action, students will continue to have their recess and lunch breaks and they will continue to be educated during class time by our excellent teachers," Bocking said. "Student safety is always our first concern, so we have ensured that we have adequate supervision at all our schools should the teachers not be available for this duty."
