A suspicious package found in Gibsons Saturday morning was a fake, but Sunshine Coast RCMP took no chances.

On Feb. 19, RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious package that was left in front of the Salvation Army overnight with a box of donations. RCMP said the package resembled several sticks of dynamite wrapped together with wires sticking out.

"As a result, the building and surrounding area was evacuated for safety reasons and traffic was diverted until the RCMP explosive disposal unit could attend," said Const. Lance Bonds in a news release. "The explosive disposal unit determined the device to be fake and of no danger."

RCMP are continuing to investigate to determine the source of the package. Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
