Surprise paving causes delays

Repaving a portion of Highway 101 on Wharf Road in Sechelt resulted in lengthy delays for some Coasters who didn't know the all-day roadwork was going to take place Oct. 11.

Capilano Highway Services had the stretch of roadway repaved to fix potholes and cracks before the rainy weather set in, but they didn't publicly advertise the effort.

"It was posted on Drive B.C. and I think we gave all the local businesses a flyer saying what was happening," said Steve Drummond, general manager of Capilano Highway Services, noting people should check the website often. "Drive B.C.'s really important."

At www.drivebc.ca, travellers can keep up to date with road closures and planned construction in order to map out routes around it.

People can choose to get email updates from the website as well, so they don't have to check it daily.

Drummond said he doesn't know of any more highway work planned for the Coast in the near future.

"As we get into October and November it's really tough to plan for roadwork between rainstorms," he said.
