Support group meets monthly

People in Pain Network

People in chronic pain now have a place to meet, share their struggles and learn pain management techniques through the People in Pain Network (PIPN), which meets monthly in Sechelt.

The PIPN offers free monthly meetings for chronic pain sufferers throughout B.C. and a new support group recently started in Sechelt.

“We’re trying to get the word out about our group,” said leader Karen Switzer. “People in pain don’t necessarily get out in the community because their pain tends to isolate them, so posters don’t really work. We’re hoping that a story in the paper will reach people in their homes.”

Switzer said one in five people in B.C. live with chronic pain, which can lead to depression and isolation. The support group aims to change that.

“It’s emotional support, education and an opportunity to share with peers who can understand and help each other in a unique way because they are in the same situation,” Switzer said.

The PIPN owns the rights to the Canadian Pain Toolkit self-management program, and Switzer said much practical information is given to group participants via the toolkit.

“There are 12 tools,” Switzer said, including such things as “how to pace your day, learning how to prioritize, developing goals and action plans, being patient with yourself, learning relaxation skills, stretching and exercise.”

She said that while the pain toolkit is used by PIPN, it doesn’t determine the support group’s focus; the participants do that, based on their needs and wants.

The local PIPN group meets every third Tuesday of the month at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre in the Community Room from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 20.
