Between Dec. 19 and 20, a vandal damaged a toilet and ripped a paper dispenser off the wall of the public washrooms in Hackett Park. This kind of vandalism has been an on-going issue for this area. On Dec. 20, police responded to a call about a suspicious item found in a donation box on a BC Transit bus, which was described as looking like a bomb. The item was determined to be a geo-cache device, and as the origin could not be determined, it was destroyed locally.??
A shoplifter was caught on camera at a business in Gibsons, stealing jewelry and giftware. The suspect was identified and police were able to recover most of the stolen items. The file is still under investigation.??
On Dec. 20, a thief stole two children's back packs from a bus stop on Teredo Street. The G.I. Joe and Hot Wheels back packs contained library books and papers. ??
On Dec. 23, a hybrid style bike was found in the 6200 block of Highway 101. The bike is in good shape and of good quality. The owner may claim with a detailed description, reference file 11-8946. ??
RCMP and another passerby came upon a single vehicle collision on Highway 101 near Largo Road, where a vehicle had flipped over and landed in the northbound ditch. The lone occupant and driver were located inside the vehicle, unharmed. The driver, who was taken to hospital for assessment, advised that she lost control of the vehicle after spilling a hot beverage on her lap. Weather and road conditions are believed to have been contributing factors. The matter has been referred to ICBC. ??
On Dec. 25, police attended to a vehicle, which had struck a hydro pole in the 5600 block Xenichen Avenue. The empty vehicle, which had been stolen early that morning, was towed to the detachment for further investigation. ??
Police attended a single vehicle collision in the 12100 block Highway 101 after the occupants called for help after rolling their vehicle and ending upside down in a ditch. Emergency health services and fire also attended to assist. The driver advised she and her passengers were travelling southbound when she failed to navigate a sharp corner, lost control of the vehicle and went over the embankment. Speed is considered a factor and the driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to keep right.
On Dec. 30, RCMP received a report of a suspicious email originating from England, seemingly from a known Sunshine Coast resident, requesting money to be transferred via Western Union after the subject claimed he was pistol-whipped and robbed of all his money, credit cards and cell phone. Police confirmed that this was a scam and that the resident named in the email was not responsible for the email.
On Jan. 1, police responded to a mischief-in-progress file in the 700 block North Road, after a caller reported hearing the sound of glass breaking. Two male suspects were seen running from a business, and after a brief vehicle and foot pursuit, one of the suspects was apprehended. The intoxicated youth was arrested for mischief and held until he was sober. Two more reports of broken glass at addresses in the 700 block North Road were received and are being investigated as well. The youth is facing criminal charges of mischief and was later released on a promise to appear.
On Jan. 1, RCMP attended the 9200 block Truman Road after receiving several reports of shots being fired. After canvassing the area, police located a group of men skeet shooting off a forest service road near Trout Lake Road. All the men were properly licensed and handling the firearms accordingly.
On Jan. 1, a possible impaired driver was reported driving on the wrong side of Highway 101 near Havies Road. The witness honked her horn and flashed her high beams in order to alert the suspect driver he was on the wrong side of the road, but he continued on for several hundred metres before correcting himself. Police located the elderly driver who was not impaired, but admitted he was on the wrong side of the road due to temporary confusion. Police are requesting a driver's medical review.
