Eleven-year-old Oliver Telfer is sporting a new gold medal after earning the highest score in British Columbia on a challenging Pythagoras Math contest for elementary school students nation-wide.

"I got 46 out of 50, which is the highest score in B.C. The average for all of Canada was 23.98," said Telfer.

He said he's pretty proud of the accomplishment. "I hoped I did well, but when I heard I was going to be named the provincial champ I was like, wow," said Telfer.

Telfer was one of 12 students at West Sechelt Elementary School who trained for the upcoming math exam with principal Carolyn Spence. Nine of those students exceeded the national average. They were: James Shaw, Brandon Hussey, Cody McKay, Matthew Brown, Paul Desautels, Doug Cuthbertson, Allison Powell, Brendan Rolston and Telfer.

Telfer was awarded his gold medal of achievement at a year-end assembly at the elementary school, where all of the participants were recognized.

Telfer says he's always liked math and plans to go on to work in a mathematics field.

"Maybe I'll be an accountant like my dad," he said.
